What Meta AI actually is
Meta AI is a general assistant made by Meta, the company behind Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp. You can ask ordinary questions, plan something, use voice, search for current information and create or edit images.
The name covers several related experiences. The dedicated app and meta.ai are not identical to Meta AI inside WhatsApp or Instagram. The downloadable Llama models are different again: they are for developers and are not the hosted consumer assistant.
As of July 2026, Muse Spark 1.1 powers the Meta AI app and meta.ai. Meta says the model can plan multi-step work, connect to selected services, synthesize research and create items such as slides. These abilities began in selected markets, so they may not be visible in every account. Meta’s Muse Spark 1.1 announcement explains the rollout.
Where you can meet Meta AI
App and website
The broadest Meta AI experience, including newer planning, voice and creation tools where supported.
Social apps
Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and Threads can place Meta AI in searches, chats or creation tools.
You can chat directly with Meta AI or deliberately invoke it in a conversation, subject to local availability.
AI glasses
Compatible Meta glasses add hands-free voice and camera help, but require a separate hardware purchase.
Rollouts are gradual. A feature shown in Meta’s app, an American review or a product video may not exist in your country, language or account. That inconsistency is one of the most important things for beginners to understand.
What beginners can do with it
For simple jobs, Meta AI works like other general assistants. It can explain an unfamiliar term, draft a message, suggest dinner ideas, turn a goal into steps or help plan a trip. Web-connected answers may include links, but citations are not consistent enough to treat the answer as checked research.
Voice is a major part of the dedicated app. Muse Spark was designed for conversations where you can interrupt, change topic or switch language. It can also work with images and live camera input where those features are available. Meta’s original Muse Spark announcement describes these multimodal features.
Image work uses a separate model called Muse Image. It can generate from a prompt, use photos as inputs and respond to edits drawn or described on an image. Both Meta and Reuters reported its July 2026 rollout. Availability inside Instagram and WhatsApp remains region-dependent.
Ask: “Plan three simple dinners using chicken, eggs and vegetables. Make one shopping list and mark anything I should check for allergies.” This tests planning and follow-up questions without sharing private information. Check every ingredient yourself before using the result.
Where Meta AI works well
Easy first step
If it already appears in an app you use, trying one harmless question takes almost no setup.
Voice and camera
Talking or showing something can be easier than describing it in a long typed prompt.
Images in context
You can create an image, then refine it conversationally instead of starting again.
Plans and outputs
Newer app and web features can combine research, planning and slide creation in one task.
Independent coverage broadly confirms the expanded feature set, while also reminding readers that Meta’s descriptions are product claims rather than proof of perfect results. Engadget’s Muse Spark overview is a useful outside account.
The limits worth knowing
It can be wrong. Meta AI can produce a confident sentence that is inaccurate, outdated or unsupported. The consumer app has also received criticism for inconsistent answers and an experience that did not always feel as personal as advertised. Bloomberg Law’s review describes those persistent flaws.
The experience is fragmented. “Meta AI supports this feature” does not necessarily mean Meta AI supports it inside WhatsApp on your phone. The app and website usually receive major upgrades first.
Private modes have trade-offs. Incognito Chat was text-only when introduced, without image uploads. It may also be unavailable in your region. And rapid model changes can make a six-month-old tutorial misleading.
Visible sources are not guaranteed. A web-connected answer can still leave out an important source, cite a page that does not support the sentence or combine old and new information. Ask Meta AI for publication dates, but treat that as the beginning of checking rather than the end.
Use our five-step fact-checking routine before relying on claims about news, health, money or rules.
Training, memory and personalized ads
Meta says its generative-AI training has used public online information, licensed data and public content from Facebook and Instagram. It says private posts were not used, but messages deliberately shared with AI features may be used to improve those systems. Meta’s privacy explanation sets out that distinction.
AI conversations can also affect what you see elsewhere. Since 16 December 2025, Meta has used interactions with its AI features as a signal for content and advertising recommendations in covered regions. Asking about hiking, for example, may influence later hiking posts or advertisements. Meta says certain sensitive topics are excluded from ad targeting and points users to Ads Preferences and feed controls. Meta’s recommendation notice gives the details.
That does not automatically make Meta AI unsafe, but it does change the bargain. A casual question can become part of a broader profile. Avoid giving an ordinary AI chat passwords, identity numbers, financial details, confidential work or another person’s private information.
What Meta AI can see in WhatsApp
Ordinary personal WhatsApp messages and calls remain end-to-end encrypted. Meta says it cannot read those normal conversations. Meta AI receives information when you deliberately chat with the assistant, share something with it or invoke it in a supported conversation. Those are different situations, and the familiar encryption notice should not be read as permission to send confidential material to an AI.
Incognito Chat provides a separate option where available. Meta says it uses WhatsApp’s Private Processing technology so the AI conversation is not saved and is not visible even to Meta. At launch it was text-only. This is a company security claim, although Reuters independently reported the design and limitations. Meta provides additional detail in its Incognito Chat announcement.
A private chat with a person, a normal chat with Meta AI and an Incognito Chat are three different data situations. Check which one you are using before typing.
Is it free, and who is it for?
Basic consumer use is free where Meta AI is supported. Limits are not always published as one fixed allowance. Meta also offers or tests subscriptions for higher creation limits in some places, while compatible glasses cost extra. Check the offer shown in your own account rather than relying on an old price table.
| Meta AI may fit | Choose something else when |
|---|---|
| You want quick help inside familiar Meta apps. | You need dependable citations for formal research. |
| You prefer voice, camera and simple image editing. | You require the same features across every country and device. |
| Your questions are low-risk and easy to verify. | Your work contains regulated, confidential or customer data. |
Convenient, capable and worth using carefully
Meta AI is a sensible free starting point for everyday questions, voice and image tasks, especially when it is already inside an app you use. Muse Spark 1.1 has made the dedicated app and website more capable, but availability remains uneven and polished answers still need checking.
The privacy decision is personal. Normal WhatsApp chats remain protected, yet information deliberately sent to Meta AI follows different rules and AI interactions can influence recommendations. Keep your first experiments harmless, review the sources and use our beginner safety rules.
