ChatGPT vs Gemini vs Claude

There is no universal winner. The useful question is which assistant fits the things you actually want to do.

The short answer

Start with ChatGPT for broad everyday use, Gemini if you already live in Google’s apps, or Claude if most of your work involves writing and long documents. Try the same real task in two of them before paying.

01 · AT A GLANCE

The quick comparison

ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude all let you type a question in ordinary language and receive a conversational answer. Their biggest differences appear in the surrounding tools, connected services and the kind of work each makes feel easiest.

AssistantStrong starting pointWorth knowing
ChatGPTA bit of everything, including writing, files, research and images. The busy feature set can feel like a lot on your first visit.
GeminiPeople already using Google, Gmail, Drive, Docs or Android.Connections, features and limits vary by account, country and plan.
ClaudeWriting, careful discussion and understanding long documents. It can analyse images and create diagrams, but not generate photos or illustrations.
02 · THE BASICS

What each assistant actually is

ChatGPT is made by OpenAI. It combines questions, writing, planning, learning, web research, images and file analysis in one service. That breadth makes it an obvious first stop when you do not yet know which AI features you will use.

Gemini is Google’s assistant. It handles many of the same everyday tasks and can connect to selected Google services with your permission. That can be convenient if Gmail, Docs and Drive are already part of your day.

Claude is made by Anthropic. Its uncluttered chat works well for discussing an idea, improving a piece of writing or making sense of a long document. It can also search the web, analyse uploads and build interactive diagrams or charts.

03 · FIRST USE

How easy is each one to start using?

Honestly, there is not much between them. Open the website or app, sign in and type into a box. Nobody needs to learn special commands. If you can send an email, you can start with any of the three.

The differences show up after the first answer. ChatGPT puts many abilities close at hand. Gemini feels familiar to people with a Google account. Claude’s screen is quieter and may feel less distracting. None of those differences makes one automatically better.

04 · BEFORE YOU PAY

Free and paid access

All three have free access. That is enough to try ordinary questions, rewriting and simple planning before you buy anything. Uploads, web research, image tools and advanced models may have tighter limits.

Paid plans mainly give you higher limits, additional models or tools, and priority access when demand is high. Prices, plan names and exact allowances change and can differ by country or billing platform. For current details, use the full tool guides above and confirm the final price on the provider’s own checkout page.

Do not subscribe on day one.

Try one real task on the free plan first. Upgrade only when a specific limit repeatedly gets in your way.

05 · PRACTICAL DIFFERENCES

Everyday jobs, and who handles them well

Ordinary questions

All three are capable. The quality depends as much on your question and the source material as the brand.

Writing

Claude often suits longer drafts; ChatGPT makes variations easy; Gemini fits naturally around eligible Google writing tools.

Research

All three can search the web. You still need to open the sources and check whether they support the answer.

Images

ChatGPT and Gemini can generate images. Claude can inspect images and build diagrams, but not create photos or illustrations.

Files

All three can work with common documents and images, although file types, sizes and usage limits depend on the plan.

Connected apps

Gemini is the natural fit for Google services. ChatGPT and Claude also offer connections, but availability varies.

If visible sources are your main priority, an answer engine such as Perplexity is designed around source-backed summaries from the start.

06 · REALISTIC EXPECTATIONS

The limits worth knowing

Every assistant here can produce a wrong answer in a confident voice. That is not a problem unique to one company. Fluent language is not proof that the facts have been checked.

In a 2025 study coordinated by the European Broadcasting Union, journalists from 22 public-service media organisations assessed more than 3,000 answers about news and current affairs. Almost half had at least one significant issue, a third had serious sourcing problems and a fifth contained a major accuracy issue.

The study focused on news, so it does not measure every possible AI task. It does show why a polished answer about something important still deserves a source check.

Availability is another limit.

Features roll out at different speeds across countries, languages, devices, ages and account types. A feature shown in a video may not exist in your account.

07 · YOUR INFORMATION

What happens to what you type

OpenAI may use chats from individual ChatGPT services to improve its models. You can opt out in Data Controls, and Temporary Chats are not used for training.

Google can save chats in Gemini Apps Activity when Keep Activity is on. Some chats may be reviewed by people to improve quality and safety, and reviewed chats can be retained for up to three years. Google provides controls for deleting activity or turning Keep Activity off.

Anthropic may use consumer Claude chats for model improvement when you allow it. Incognito chats are not used for model improvement, although separate retention can apply to safety flags and legal obligations.

Whichever assistant you choose, follow the same rule from our AI safety guide: do not paste passwords, identity numbers, bank details or another person’s private information into a normal chat.

08 · BEST FIT

Who should choose which?

Choose ChatGPT

You want one broad assistant for writing, images, files, questions and everyday experiments.

Choose Gemini

Google is already your daily habit and connected Google services would save you time.

Choose Claude

Most of your tasks involve words, long documents or working through an idea carefully.

Choose a specialist

Your real goal is cited research, finished design, music or video rather than general assistance.

09 · YOUR NEXT STEP

A simple way to decide

Pick a task you already need to do this week. Try it in one assistant, then use exactly the same wording in a second one. Twenty minutes will teach you more about your own preference than a benchmark chart.
